The Making of an Ice Dam

How do ice dams form, you ask? It's science!

When you heat the inside of your home, that warm air rises and escapes through your ceiling to your roof. That heat causes any snow that has accumulated on your roof to melt, sending that water to the coolest part of your roof where it refreezes. The water that has once again frozen causes a heavy mound of ice, and traps any water that has melted behind it. What happens when water is blocked by a solid formation? A dam. With no where else to go, that water is pushed under your roof shingles, and can cause it to leak into your home. Ice dams can also drip and refreeze over the edge of your roof, resulting in icicles. These icicles can add excessive weight to your gutter system, pulling your gutters away from your home, causing extensive damage to gutters and to your home's exterior, too!

Is Ice Really That Heavy?

Yes. About 15 pounds per linear foot to be precise.

Ice is heavy. And that heavy ice can cause major damage to your gutter system. Aluminum gutters are durable, but they are not made to sustain those extra pounds. One of the most common reasons our customers call us to replace their gutters in the spring is because their existing system was pulled loose due to the heavy ice and snow during the winter. But gutters pulling completely way from your home isn't even the worst-case scenario. Gutters that have been pulled away just enough to effect the pitch of the system can result in improper water drainage. This issue cannot be detected from the ground, so the low spots and clogs caused by the throw pitch could continue to grow without notice--until your gutters overflow and potentially cause major water damage to your home.
